OneDrive Sync Issue – “the cloud file provider is not running”

The crux of the matter

Using a USB for file storage is an age old concept in the world of computing. Everyone has done it, whether it be for photo storage, saving work files because you move PC’s regularly, or just as a place for your important documents.

But the question is, what happens if you :

  • Put them in the washing machine,
  • Misplace/lose them,
  • Snap them,
  • Accidentally delete files without a backup.

Well, unfortunately, if the only place you kept them was on the USB then those files are probably gone. You can pay through the nose with Data Recovery experts in the hope of recovering some of these important documents, but it’s never guaranteed that it’s going to go your way.

So what do I do?

Move to cloud storage! Whilst it is a subscription service, cloud storage provides a heap of benefits.

  • Sign in anywhere to access your files,
  • Online tools such as Text, Presentation and Spreadsheet editing,
  • Recycle Bin inside of the cloud storage to find and restore accidentally deleted files,
  • Version history to revert back to a version before mistakes were made,
  • Security – you have to sign into cloud storage whereas if a USB is found and is not encrypted, it can just be plugged in and accessed.

What’re my options?

There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to Cloud Storage, and the best one (in my opinion) is entirely user based due to their integrations.

OneDrive – integrates well with Windows, and backs up your Documents, Pictures and Desktop on your main PC for you (as long as you turn the option on during setup)

iCloud – integrates well with MacOS and iOS devices, and works the same way as Windows does by backing up your Documents, Pictures and Desktop on your Apple devices for you (again, as long as you turn the option on)

Google Drive – integrates well with Chromebooks, and is the main storage location for your Documents, Pictures and Desktop by default.

Dropbox – the most versatile of the bunch, allowing you to do much of the above, however not tied into one specific operating system more than another – therefore less of a bias towards functionality.
